CRIME ALERT FROM THE POLICE CHIEF
Crime Alert: Copper Thefts
On Wednesday of this week and again this morning the police department responded to investigate two separate breaking and entering offenses where suspect(s) forced entry into vacant homes and removed copper pipe from the basements of each residence. The residences were vacant and were listed for sale. The suspect(s) gained entry by forcing the back doors open on each of the houses. Along with processing the crime scenes, officers canvassed each neighborhood looking for leads and potential witnesses. Based upon preliminary information, we believe the offenses occurred sometime during this past week.
Copper thieves’ typical targets are properties that are for sale or rent as well as businesses and vacant buildings. Increasingly, copper thefts make up more and more of the breaking and entering cases in the Hamilton County region. As a result of these recent incidents the Wyoming Police Department offers the following Crime Prevention Tip:
Become aware of your neighbors and your neighborhood. Take the time to get to know your neighbors so that you will be aware when something at your neighbor’s home does not seem to be “right.” It probably isn’t. Ask your neighbors to watch your home while you are away and be willing to watch their homes while they are away. Look out for each other. Don’t hesitate to call the police department even if you are not sure. Consider forming or joining a Neighborhood Watch program.
