Crime Prevention - Compton Ridge & Burns Avenue

On Wednesday of this week Wyoming Police responded to investigate two reported burglaries and a theft offense on Compton Ridge Road and a burglary on Burns Avenue, which had occurred overnight.   These offenses involved suspects entering unlocked vehicles, garages and houses, and removing items such as a navigation system, a 15” flat screen T.V., various electric and gas powered tools, cell phones, credit cards, a watch, and a laptop.  There was no forced entry in any of these offenses. These were crimes of opportunity, where suspects were looking specifically for unlocked vehicles, garages and homes to enter and steal property.

As a reminder, most of these types of crimes can be prevented by making sure your windows, doors and vehicles are locked and secured, and by making sure that valuables are not left in your vehicles when parked. In addition, the police department offers a free service where an officer will meet with you to conduct a security survey of your property.

Security Surveys

A Crime Prevention Security Survey is a visual and physical inspection conducted by a police officer to evaluate your property from a crime prevention and security viewpoint. Based on the inspection, the officer will make recommendations to you on how you can reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime by using proven crime prevention techniques.

If you make a request for a Security Survey, a member from the Department's Community Resources Section will set up a date and time to meet you at your home or business and conduct a security survey inspection. The officers are specially trained and certified as Crime Prevention Practitioners and will evaluate the risk factor for your location.

Some of the items the officer will review and may make recommendations about include:

  • Door locks
  • Window locks
  • Exterior lighting
  • Bushes or trees that should be trimmed for better visibility
  • Motion sensing exterior lights
  • How to stop your mail delivery during vacations
  • Creating a partnership with a neighbor
  • Smoke detectors
  • Alarm systems
  • Security of yard tools, bicycles and other such items kept in sheds or in carports.

This is a FREE service. To schedule a security survey of your home or business please contact the Wyoming Police Department at 821.0141.

Also, if you see or hear anything suspicious please contact the police department immediately by calling 821.0141 or 911 in an emergency.

Remember: The most effective way to prevent crime and to keep from becoming a victim of crime is to minimize and/or eliminate the opportunities for crime to occur.
