HEAT ADVISORY - WYOMING POLICE ASK THAT YOU CHECK ON YOUR NEIGHBORS; "COOLING CENTER" FOR WYOMING RESIDENTS
Heat Advisory: Wyoming Police ask that you Check on Your Neighbors; “Cooling Center” for Wyoming Residents
An excessive heat warning remains in effect for today and the rest of the week, from noon until 9 p.m. Heat index values are projected to reach 105 degrees through Friday.
As a result, the Wyoming Police Department is asking residents to check on their neighbors, friends, family, and any elderly and homebound folks they may know. Also, the Wyoming Police Department still offers its free “Are You Okay Telephone Reassurance Program” as a way of checking on the elderly, homebound and medically disabled. Calls are placed to the resident by an automated system and if there is no answer, police officers check up on the resident.
Heat Safety Tips
- Do not leave children in cars. Even in cool temperatures, cars can heat up to dangerous temperatures very quickly. Never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car, even if the windows are cracked open.
- Also, make sure your pets aren’t outside too long and that they have plenty of water.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen.
- Pace yourself. When working in the heat, monitor the condition of your co-workers and have someone do the same for you. Heat-induced illness can cause a person to become confused or lose consciousness.
- Use a buddy system. If you are 65 years of age or older, have a friend or relative call to check on you twice a day during a heat wave. If you know someone in this age group, check on them at least twice a day.
- Monitor those at high risk. Although anyone at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others, including infants and children. Heat exhaustion, heat stroke and other heat related illnesses will be possible, especially if you spend a significant amount of time outdoors, or are involved in any strenuous outdoor activity. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
- Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat Stroke is an emergency and if suspected …call 911.
