Police Department Investigating Copper Theft from Home / Crime Prevention Tips

On Monday, July 26,  Wyoming Police Officers responded to investigate a theft of copper pipe from a vacant residence in town. The residence is currently unoccupied and for sale. The suspects gained entrance to the house through an unsecured pet door and stole most of the visible copper pipe from the basement.  Similar thefts have occurred in vacant homes and at job sites throughout the region, some involving the theft of copper downspouts and gutters. This type of crime is increasing nationwide primarily due to the decreasing availability and increasing costs of copper and other metals used in construction worldwide. Although this type of crime is extremely rare in our community, residents are still encouraged to take some practical steps to help keep our community safe.  Here are some tips to assist the Police Department in keeping our community safe:

  • Keep an eye on your neighbor’s homes, especially if they are vacant, for sale, or foreclosed.
  • Home Security Systems can deter and/or prevent crime by alerting the police department to an unauthorized entry.
  • Residents who see anything unusual can call the Police Department at 821-0141 to report it.

Please contact the Police Department with any additional questions or you would like to schedule a security survey of your home or business.
