Wyoming Urban Forestry 2010 Tree Program
Wyoming Urban Forestry 2010 Tree Program
Discounted Nursery Trees Available For Wyoming Residents Private Property - Installed!
The City of Wyoming began a tree replacement program in 2009 as a response to Hurricane Ike which devastated hundreds of private property trees in Wyoming in 2008. The Wyoming Urban Forestry Board worked with two local nurseries to offer a turn-key approach to reforest private property canopy. The board established a goal to locate professional tree nurseries that would offer Wyoming residents high quality nursery grade trees, to make it easy to order directly from them by phone, to have the nursery include delivery and professional installation in the total price, and then bill residents at a discounted municipal rate. The program was well-received by Wyoming residents and they requested it be repeated in 2010.
In 2010 the City of Wyoming’s Urban Forestry Board has secured relationships with two local companies who have agreed to offer municipal discounts to Wyoming residents for orders placed beginning now with planting to take place as weather permits. Optimal planting times are early Spring and Fall. Natorps Nurseries (contact: Craig Natorp at 513.398-4769 x1100) and Lagergren Nursery (contact: Bill Lagergren at 513.756-9362) are the two nurseries offering the program this spring. Each company offers high quality nursery grade tree stock and both have agreed to discount their respective prices. Wyoming residents should call the companies directly beginning now receive this turn-key program. They must identify themselves as a Wyoming resident to receive the discount. Both companies will take orders over the phone, deliver and professionally install trees where residents direct them to do so. The list with prices is available on the City of Wyoming’s website at www.wyoming.oh.us/ufb .
Before making a purchase, residents are asked to please consider where each tree should be planted. The site for the tree should be selected based on the future size of the mature tree and how the mature tree will interact with your house and with any overhead or underground utilities. Most of the trees offered are large shade trees such as maples and oaks. However, some smaller varieties of crabapples, redbuds, cherries and maples are available for smaller lots. The goal is to help replenish the tree canopy. More on selecting trees can be found in “Deciduous Trees for Ohio, HYG 1082 01” published by Ohio State University Extension office (available to download at http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/1000/index.html.)
The Urban Forestry Board would like to monitor and improve this tree-purchase program. To that end, the nurseries will be reporting the sales to the board. The board also would appreciate receiving from homeowners any input on the program and the quality of the installed trees. Wyoming UFB Members include: Alex Teass, Amy Hoffman, Todd Wales, Dave Shaw, Gayle Ficken-Clark, Glenn Lewis, Walter Cordes (Council rep), and Mike Lippert (Wyoming staff rep).
