Safeguard Your Home Against Burglars
Below is an important message from Police Chief Gary Baldauf.
Safeguard Your Home Against Burglars
Did you know that approximately 20 burglaries are reported in Wyoming each year? Of all reported burglaries most take place at residences and occur during daylight hours when residents are not at home. Home burglaries also tend to rise in the summer months when people are more likely to keep their windows and garage doors open. Within the past two weeks there were two daytime burglaries reported on both Congress Run and Compton Ridge where a number of valuables were taken. In both instances no one was home, which is what the criminals prefer.
The Wyoming Police Department is trying to reduce that number by offering free security surveys to residents of Wyoming. The survey is conducted by Wyoming police officers who have received specialized training. The survey takes approximately one hour and results in an in-depth examination of your home and will provide you with a recommendation of steps you can take to better secure your home.
Here are a few tips to help safeguard your home:
- Deadbolts on all exterior doors.
- Install screws in all lock plates.
- Secure all sliding and French doors.
- Secure all windows.
- Keep all valuables out of sight.
- Close garage doors.
- Install motion lighting around the perimeter of your home.
- Keep shrubbery and landscaping pruned.
- Make sure house numbers are visible.
- Secure any vehicles parked outside your home.
- Consider the installation of a home security system.
